What is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured, machine-readable record that travels with a physical product throughout its entire lifecycle — from manufacturing to end-of-life. It captures information about the product's origin, materials, components, repairability, energy performance, and after-sales history.

The concept is central to the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which creates the legal framework for DPP requirements across product categories. Batteries are the first category with mandatory DPP requirements (from 2027), with textiles, electronics, and construction materials following in subsequent years. The regulation is designed to make the EU economy more circular — reducing waste, extending product lifetimes, and enabling better end-of-life decisions.

Practically, the DPP is accessed via a data carrier — typically a QR code, RFID tag, or barcode — attached to the product. Consumers, repair technicians, recyclers, and regulators can scan this to access the product's full lifecycle record. Manufacturers are responsible for creating and maintaining the DPP, and for ensuring it remains accurate throughout the product's life.

What information does a DPP contain?

The exact data requirements vary by product category and will be specified in delegated acts under the ESPR. However, the general data categories required across all product types include:

Product identity

Unique identifier, manufacturer, model, production date, batch/serial number

Materials & components

Bill of materials, substance content, recycled content percentages

Environmental performance

Carbon footprint, energy efficiency, durability, repairability score

Repair & maintenance

Repair history, spare parts availability, authorised repair instructions

Warranty information

Warranty terms, claim history, extensions granted, remaining coverage

End-of-life guidance

Disassembly instructions, recycling codes, take-back programme links

Why warranty data is central to the DPP

Of all the data types the DPP requires, warranty and repair data is among the most operationally complex to capture and maintain. Manufacturing data is relatively static — it is captured at point of production. Warranty and repair data is dynamic — it accumulates throughout the product's life, across multiple stakeholders, in multiple geographies.

Every warranty claim that is filed creates a data event that should be reflected in the DPP: what failed, when, how it was diagnosed, whether it was repaired or replaced, what parts were used, how long the product's warranty period now extends to.
